Press Release: Ada Ferrell Tenants Win Big Change

Tullahoma Tenants Win Big Changes at Ada Ferrell

Rusted stairs, faded signage at low-income property getting fixed after tenants take public action

Tullahoma, Tenn.— After weeks of calling public attention to the potentially dangerous conditions of Ada Ferrell Garden Apartments, tenants are seeing some major changes taking place at the complex.

Residents came together and joined TN Renters United to urge their landlords to replace building address markers that were so faded that many reported ambulances and firefighters getting lost and delayed in responding to emergencies – with potentially deadly consequences. Renters also brought attention to the rusted-out stairs they felt posed an additional hazard.

Johnnie explained she had twice experienced a delay in emergency services due to first responders being unable to identify which building her unit was in. “Something needed to be done before someone got hurt,” she said.

“We’ve waited a long long time for the owners to accept responsibility and be sure Ada Ferrell Apartments are compliant with Tullahoma codes and the law, “ said a former resident, Caroline. “Renters need landlords to be good neighbors and responsible community members. The condition of this property was unsafe for my family and we had to move.”

Frustrated by the feeling of indignity, tenants got organized and took action to get things done, talking to their elected officials at both the state and local levels, getting a commitment from Vice-Mayor Mathis, and garnering support from both local churches Trinity Lutheran and Tullahoma United Universalist Church. Concerned Tullahoma neighbors signed an open letter to Ada Ferrell’s landlords and tenants took their concerns directly to their landlords via certified mail.

On May 28, they saw the fruits of their labor begin to take root when they found workers repairing the stairs. And Saturday, June 14, their efforts were reaffirmed when new building markers went up on a few of the buildings.

“Finally, there’s progress. People here can move forward,” Johnnie said. “It’s about time.”
