From the frozen, northern bayous of Anchorage, AK, down the American west coast of autonomy, in search of a perfect fit, solo heavy-stone, folk troubadour songstress, Rooster Blackspur, got to Nashville some wisdom and moons ago to finally hold an album release show, rounding off a solid array of four Rooster albums over the course of her journey with her latest release, Live at The 5-Spot, presented for the first time at East Nashville venue, The 5-Spot, February 17, 2026.
With a little explanatory, between-song banter to the degree of girl blues –girl blues originated, basically, within notice some local, female artists at area live shows, express a poignant, lyrical sentiment due to their experiences, modernly similar to that of old bluesmen back in the day, forging America (of the 20’s and 30’s true American guitar music [your ‘blind’s’, your ‘ramblin’s’, and your ‘willie’s’]: the music they made over here from stuff had back there, creating blues and bluegrass] with the emotion noticeably powering the performances., because you’re right there.
Rooster had Folk & Proper in for a warming, sound check with Nashville venue, The 5-Spot’s sound engineer that night, [Eric], discovering -no, honing- some warmth heard over the Nashville skyline, this Monday evening, February 17, 2026.
Seemingly made up of Nashville cats on lap steel, lead electric, bass, and a jazz-brushed drums, all roadhouse funk fusion-ing, and then some The Kinks on drums, around 4:22, a quintet of local, hired musicians warm up the stage, with Rooster Blackspur strumming the acoustic.
5:53, guitarist Mike Severs plays with a newly established echo warmth, riffing the opening to “Gimme Shelter”… just some dudes warming up a band, as [Eric] adjusts the levels moving between spots on stage to catch the sound in the right places.
6:22, the opening note to “New Mexico” on bass; a quick question asked, but the song had begun to trickle… 6:35, “New Mexico” vocals croon for a vocal test with bass accompaniment… 6:54, the brushed snare picks up… There’s the Six Pence None the Richer sound.
Sever’s lead guitar licks in, for presence. Blackspur’s soothing, jazz vocalist warmth, as the echo from [Eric’s] tinkering fades in and out, adjusting the levels of instrumentation coming out of the amps for such a warm sound; almost Bob Dylan’s band when they’re under the Jefferson St. Bridge, as this night slowly turns into the soundtrack of a film noir, adding appeal. …There’s the Rooster Blackspur sound. “Big Dipper,” a starry, country dreamscape with lap steel, acoustic strum and electric guitar filler riffs, delivers another heavily stringed canyon-of-sound number (with an easy piano rhythm and a xylophone’s ping) for a grandness that encapsulates the blend of the secular and heavenly. The power of the artist’s longing shines through in a wall-of-sound fashion in this beautiful late album track.”

Seemingly there were some things on her mind, taking care of chores, maybe, and simply doing the dance of [being type A, in] independence, with the list of to-do’s in mind that make up those days. It’s in order for a sense of victory, or maybe procrastination, Blackspur nailed it in spades, this evening.
Points of intense focus, people to be greeted, but ultimately in tune with the entire night, as a whole, showing strength in vocals, the directive of someone who knows where she’s been, goes, and she knows what she wants.

Rooster’s show, within a girl blues, follows to lay out one of the healthiest ways noticeable to adapt/cope/carry on/succeed, and the stepping stones and solutions in order to do so, and some keys -for real- to practice in your day-to-day, and/or hour-to-hour, in order to get by, and work towards something greater.
It’s not just venting about the frustrations of life in a position to be able to. These are girl blues with solutions -But, with solutions, in the key of genuine psychological gem-work from someone who’s created a stage act about how and why she’d done it.

[…] Good evening everybody. Welcome to the 5-Spot. I’m Rooster Blackspur, and I’m so, so excited that you’re all here tonight.
We’re gonna get started on an evening full of music, and I’m gonna start on the guitar, solo, and then I’m gonna have my friend, Harry Keyworth, come up as our featured guest, then we’re gonna have the Rooster Blackspur Band come up and do a whole set of music, as well, so you’re in for a full two hours of music and celebration.
Tonight is our CD release show. We have a five-song EP recorded here, Live at the 5 Spot, so a lot of you were in the room and in the moment when we recorded those songs, so we’re very excited about that.
I love releasing music into the world to people.
“I just feel that the first thing in my life that I am before anything is a songwriter,” Rooster said .
“I feel like I just usher them, y’know. They come through me, but I’m ushering them to other people” [A PURPOSE].
And I have this belief that songs can change your life, and they can change the world and that’s not a naive way of looking at it. I’ve seen song it happen in peoples’ lives, I’ve seen people buy plane tickets in foreign countries to go volunteer because of a song. I’ve seen people sell their houses ane buy a farm somewere in the scounry becaseu they wanted to graow a peach tree.
Songs have a way of finding us right where we are, meeting us there, and saying something to us maybe we needed to hear from somebody else that we couldn’t hear from the people around us.
And so I’m a huge beleiver in the power of songs, and that’s what I offer from stage. I’m not a sensational person, but I do beleive in the sensation of music, so if you want to take a deep breath with me tonight, I’d love to take one [whole room breaths].
We all just went through an interesting situation, too, with this ice storm.
I was in a winter hiking trip that went really wrong, when I was in my mid-twenties. And I was hiking with -there were three sets of people coming up, and I was their first set that went out with a woman and her six-month-old baby. -In Alaska, we call those ‘go babies,’ where you go everywhere with your baby strapped to your back. So she was a ‘go baby mama,’ and she was used to taking this baby everywhere. We were going on a seven-and-a-half-mile trip in the winter to a state cabin. We’d done it many years, many times.
But something really crazy happened, and all of a sudden it warmed up, and all the snow got rotten, and we started falling through the snowpack. We couldn’t’ us our snowshoes anymore -I was breaking trail for seven and a half miles, that was three to four feet deep.
I herniated my spine, got into-when we got into the cabin, there was no heat, ther was no firewood. The propane heater had been left on. And so, I burned my backpack, and everything I had; left her and the baby in the cabin to try and find pieces of wood that were dry.
But in that time I lit that small fire, that heatwave turned into a frost below zero -20 below zero- and everything was coated in ice. And by the time I had broken my knife, and everything I had sharp, to scrape a little bit of wood out of trees, and things I could find that was dry, the second group came.
And they weren’t as tired as us, because we had broke trail, we they were tired. But they started helping. And by the time the third party had came, they had kinda waltzed in, in a lot of ways. Y’know what I mean? Because we had broke trail, and the next people packed it down. So they were kinda jolly. And it was highy offensive to those of us who had survive somehting really tragic.
And I know a lot of you feel that way about people who didn’t lose power, this week. You’re like, ‘You have No idea what we just went through.; (crowd laughs)
SO, forgive them. THey know not what you went through.
So I wanted to sing this song… Start the evening with this… invitation to let the music give you whatever you need from it that you need tonight.
And this is a brand-new song, so one rule about brand new songs -we don’t take suggestions on how they could be better when they’re brand new, okay?. They’re still coming into the world. They’re still infants. So, no criticism. Just say, ‘that song has room to grow’ (corwd laughs).

This is the coolest spot in town, IMO (oowowos) The reason why I’m here tonight is because the band that’re playing later, I met those guys in Colorado last I was playing in a studio, or they were in a studio. I popped in, and you were there, and we met. And that was like 2023? And I ended up moving to town. Got a residency here. I live five minutes away (point that a’way), so that’sl how it works.

42:45, tuning – I spend at least six minutes tuning- This song wrote when I first came to America when I was 21, or something. I’ve always been blown away by american gutiarists, and the landscape. Somehting so inspring about this country. I’m from Wales. There’s some cool songs abour Wales, but its a prettty crazy languate.

I’ve done a lot of touring around, solo, living out of the back of my car,taking music to people. And it’s just not as fun as playing with a band (band laughs).
BUt the dreams, y’know they pull us forward, and this songs about my dreams, and about my friends who live in New Mexico, who’re rebuilding their lives after their dreams did not come true. But isn’t it a beautiful thing we can dream a new dream. And we can keep pivoting [Roosters beginning to pick up some actual, healthy, psychological steam]. And somebody told me something once that stuck with me, and I told my friends this in their moment: Dreams are flexible. And sometimes they shape in ways that we didn’t’ want. And new dreams have some room to come in. [I MEAN, ABSOLUTE BANGERS, HERE. DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP] So, if there is something in you, calling you. It will keep you up at night. It will sour the things in your life you’re trying to be complacent with. And it will just keep knocking at your door until one day you decide you’re gonna give it a whirl. You’re gonna say yes and dance with that muse; and dance with that calling.

A Vietnam vet. ANd he became my absolute best friend when I moved 3000 miles to nowhere, I had nobody. I knew nobody. And he was my first friend. We met over at Jackhammer, and I’m so lucky to have have him in my life and to now have discarded him.
So, for all the Unholy Saints in our lives that we understand, even if nobody else does.

A suite of a set/a finishing suite, warming up a couple of the major answering songs of night, the notions of “It really does take understanding,” and “it takes a village,” [ALL HANDS ON DECK] when it comes to dealing with people, sometimes. We’re our own people, yes, but when we’re reaching out there with our perspectives in life, a little understanding goes a Looooooong way, ultimately filling the timely void we call evolution, at least peacefully, and sanely, but sometimes lovingly. Which is why we reach out.
It was a beautiful set, presented clearly, and New Mex-echo-y, in warmth, for sure, and that’s kinda how the girl blues scene in Nashville over the course of the 20’s has been, with odd examples here and there, touring in, or touring out.

And just because “New Mexico,” is an ear worm after the combination of hearing the song itself, live, but with the warmth of the song coming to life during Eric’s tinkering in the soundcheck, Rooster nailing it in intimacy of the room, while she and the band warmed up, the line “I locked myself again in New Mexico,” instead of the actual lyric, keeps looping in my head, reminding me of an old southwest joke, from “Tales of Old Sante Fe,” by Jack Handey, published in 2016
